• Materials

At Laibach & York, materials are chosen for how they feel, wear, and endure — not just how they look. We work with a small selection of considered materials, selected for longevity, comfort, and everyday use.

    Cellulose Acetate

Cellulose acetate is a premium, plant-based material derived from natural sources such as cotton and wood fibres. Unlike conventional petroleum-based plastics, it is valued for its strength, flexibility, and depth of colour.

Each sheet of acetate carries natural variation in pattern and tone. These subtle differences are inherent to the material and ensure that no two pieces are exactly alike — an essential part of their character.

    Why we use cellulose acetate

    • Plant-based and derived from renewable sources
    • Durable yet lightweight, suited for frequent wear
    • Naturally antistatic with a soft, polished lustre
    • Rich colour depth that runs through the material rather than sitting on the surface

Because of its structure, cellulose acetate can be shaped, polished, and finished without surface coatings, allowing the material itself to define the final piece.

    Sterling Silver (925)

Sterling silver is a precious metal composed of 92.5% pure silver, alloyed for strength and durability. It is a long-established standard in fine jewellery, chosen for its balance of beauty, resilience, and wearability.

We use sterling silver components in select designs — such as earrings — where comfort, skin compatibility, and long-term performance are essential.

    Why we use sterling silver

    • Suitable for sensitive skin
    • Long-lasting and repairable
    • Develops a natural patina over time, which can be gently polished
    • Retains structural integrity with proper care

    Longevity & Responsibility

We design with longevity in mind. Choosing durable materials and encouraging proper care allows each piece to be used over time rather than replaced. This approach informs how we think about responsibility — not as a claim, but as an ongoing practice shaped by materials, making, and use.
